Dr Gordon R. Morse MB ChB MRCGP DRCOG

[Photograph of Dr Morse] Gordon Morse was born in Cheltenham in 1953. He was a medical undergraduate at Dundee University Medical School and graduated in 1976. He has worked in several hospital specialities, including a year as specialist in emergency and family medicine in Taif, Saudi Arabia.

He was senior partner of a group practice in the Fens before taking over the Fovant practice in 1988. He is a GP Trainer, and Honorary Lecturer in General Practice at Southampton University Medical School.

Since 1995 he has also been Medical Consultant to Clouds House, one of the UK's longest established residential treatment centers for chemical dependency. At Clouds he has been responsible for the detoxification and medical care of more than 2000 chemically addicted patients. He is Medical Adviser to the National Association for Children of Alcoholics. He has been closely involved with the Substance Misuse Management in General Practice group since it started and has been delegate or speaker at all the national conferences to date. He is also a founder member of the International Society for Addiction Medicine. He has designed and chaired various conferences including "Innovations and Insights in Drug Abuse" at the Maudsley Hospital in 2001. He is author of "Detoxification" (Quay Books), a reference on medically assisted withdrawal from addiction in the residential setting.

He is serving on the Wiltshire Shared Care Monitoring Group and has been involved in Generalist substance misuse training throughout Wiltshire. He spoke at the RCGP national conference 2001 on "Developing a Core Curriculum for Certificate Training - What we Need to Know". He is a Mentor for the training course for the GP Certificate in Addiction, and is Lead GP in Mental Health and Addiction services to the South Wilts PCT.

In 2002 he has been appointed to the position of Regional Lead Clinician in Substance Misuse for the South West of England, to liaise between the National Treatment Agency and the Royal College of General Practitioners. He sits on the National Expert Advisory Group, which advises Government policy on drug training matters.

In 2004 he has reduced his time at Becher's Brook, to further his interests in teaching and in Addiction Medicine. He is now a Substance Misuse Consultant and works about half time in Specialist Addiction services and about half time in General Practice.

He is married to Meg Gerelli.
